Clinical Profile

I have been Professor of Equine Orthopaedics at the Royal Veterinary College since December 2003, having spent 2 years in equine practice, followed by a residency in equine surgery, PhD, and then Lecturer and Senior Lecturer at the RVC. I am a recognised Specialist in Equine Surgery, holding the RCVS Diploma of Equine Orthopaedics and the Diploma of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons, and am a Large Animal Associate of the European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging. In 2016, I was awarded the RCVS Fellowship for meritorious contribution to knowledge. I divide my time between providing specialist orthopaedic clinical service within the RVC, training postgraduates (clinical surgical trainees, PhD students and undergraduates), and undertaking research. My main clinical and research interests are in equine and human tendon disease and have been the recipient of 28 funded grant applications totalling in excess of £3.4million. I have published in excess of 100 peer-reviewed publications, 19 book chapters, 2 theses, and have been an editor of 2 books as well as number of lay publications. My clinical interests are in all aspects of equine orthopaedics, but especially lameness diagnosis, diagnostic imaging, and orthopaedic surgery, especially with respect to tendon and ligament injuries.

Research

My principal research interests span pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of both equine and human tendon disease. My work has investigated the pathogenesis of tendon disease and the effects of exercise during growth and ageing with a view of developing preventative strategies. Second, I am interested in developing novel diagnostic modalities for tendon disease involving molecular markers, imaging and biomechanics. Third, I have investigated the use of mesenchymal stem cells as a novel therapy for tendon disease and am currently collaborating with human orthopaedic surgeons on developing effective biological therapies and scaffolds for tendon repair.
